Proof of 1st English Ed - Diary of Anne Frank
FRANK, Anne (1929-1945) ANNE FRANK : THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL (ROUGH PROOF OF FIRST ENGLISH EDITION) Translated by B.M. Mooyaart-Doubleday with a foreword by Storm Jameson London : Constellation Books (Vallentine, Mitchell & Co, Ltd), 1952
FIRST EDITION, publisher?s ROUGH PROOF of first English translation published in the UK. 16mo (190 x 130mm). [2],(xviii),(282),[2]pp. Portrait frontispiece and six illustrations, blue lily on title page. Original publisher?s brown paper covers, Rough Proof stamped in ink on the front cover, half title and full title. Text unmarked, no spotting, a very clean and sound copy.

First published in the Netherlands under the title, Het Achterhuis, in 1947, teenage Anne?s description of her family?s life in hiding from 1942-1944 in the secret annex, received immediate critical and popular acclaim. Her father, Otto Frank, the only member of the Frank family to survive the Nazi concentration camps, worked tirelessly to find the right publishing house to translate, publish and preserve his daughter?s legacy. Otto enlisted an American, Meyer Levin, ?an American writer who is very interested in Anne?s book. It was he who advised [me] to take up the matter with Valentine Mitchell. He spoke to Random House about it [a] short time ago? - Letter from Otto Frank to Nathan Straus - Melnick, Ralph. THE STOLEN LEGACY OF ANNE FRANK...6pp.
Both Meyer and Otto were very careful with the English translations as they wanted to assure the original?s ??literary flow? and to prevent the incursion of ?Americanisms?... he wanted to retain its authentic voice and not sound as if it had been written by an adolescent from the States.? - as above, 7pp.
